General Equilibrium Long-Run Determinants for Spanish FDI: A Spatial Panel Data Approach

While general equilibrium theories of trade stress the role of third-country effects, little work has been done in the empirical foreign direct investment (FDI) literature to test such spatial linkages. This paper aims to provide further insights into long-run determinants of Spanish FDI by considering not only bilateral but also spatially weighted third-country determinants. The few studies carried out so far have focused on FDI flows in a limited number of countries. However, Spanish FDI outflows have risen dramatically since 1995 and today account for a substantial part of global FDI. Therefore, we estimate recently developed Spatial Panel Data models by Maximum Likelihood (ML) procedures for Spanish outflows (1993-2004) to top-50 host countries. After controlling for unobservable effects, we find that spatial interdependence matters and provide evidence consistent with New Economic Geography (NEG) theories of agglomeration, mainly due to complex (vertical) FDI motivations. Spatial Error Models estimations also provide illuminating results regarding the transmission mechanism of shocks.Foreign Direct Investment; Spatial Econometrics; Panel Data.

On the Dynamics of Exports and FDI: The Spanish Internationalization Process

This paper provides further insights into the dynamics of exports and outward foreign direct investment (FDI) flows in Spain from a time-series approach. The contribution of the paper is twofold: i) the existence of either substitution or a complementary relationship between Spanish outward investments and exports is empirically tested using a multivariate cointegrated model (VECM). The evolution in exchange flows (1993-2008) and country-specific variables (such as world demand - including Spain’s main recently growing foreign markets - for trade flows and the relative price of exports in order to proxy new global competitors) are taken into account for the first time. And ii) the growth in the trade of services in recent decades leads us to test a specific causality relationship by disaggregating between goods and services flows. Our results provide evidence of a positive (Granger) causality relationship running from FDI to exports of goods (stronger) and to exports of services (weaker) in the long run, the complementarity relation of which is consistent with vertical FDI strategies. Este trabajo gira en torno a la pregunta ¿Cuáles son los aportes del movimiento feminista peruano a la creación y establecimiento de un pensamiento laico en el Perú durante el periodo 1990-2010? Esta pregunta responde a la poca visibilización del aporte del movimiento feminista a la construcción de la categoría laicidad. Algunas temáticas vitales para contestar esta interrogante son: la relación público/privado en relación con la educación laica y la incorporación de la raza en el quehacer político feminista. Todos estos aportes sirvieron para enriquecer la construcción de una ciudadanía desde una postura laica que integra otros campos de exclusión como el género/sexualidad, la clase y la raza

Reflexiones sobre el cráneo virreinal y su relación con lo contemporáneo

Cráneos descarnados cruzan la mirada con el espectador, algunas veces son sostenidos por un santo meditativo; otras forman parte de una elegante mujer novohispana. Los cráneos habitan los viejos y oscuros muros de la Pinacoteca de la Profesa en las antiguas calles del centro histórico de la Ciudad de México. Estas imágenes misteriosas pueden cautivar o ser repulsivas a los ojos profanos del público contemporáneo, que las contemplan sin entender el sentido que tuvieron en su origen. Breaking down world trade elasticities : a panel ECM approach

Incluye bibliografíaEste trabajo analiza exhaustivamente la reciente disminución de las elasticidades del comercio internacional al crecimiento de la producción. Extendemos un modelo empírico de funciones de demanda de importaciones para tener en cuenta no solo factores transitorios, tales como los precios relativos y medidas de demanda ajustadas por intensidad en las importaciones (tablas Input-Output), sino también por factores permanentes normalmente omitidos, tales como proteccionismo, integración vertical [p. ej., cadenas globales de valor (CGV)] e inversión extranjera directa (IED). Mediante un panel heterogéneo y no estacionario de 27 países, estimamos un modelo de panel de corrección de errores (MCE), desde 1960 a 2015, para descomponer las elasticidades del comercio mundiales. Nuestros resultados evidencian: i) la presencia de cambios estructurales (cointegrados) de panel en la relación entre comercio y PIB en 2000 y 2009, siendo el consumo privado una fuente de perturbaciónii) si bien la inversión y las exportaciones son los componentes de demanda más sensibles e intensivos en importaciones, ello está lejos de ser un fenómeno transitorio, lo que está pesando claramente en la reciente desaceleración, y iii) la relevante contribución de las CGV muestra un patrón procíclico, cuestionando el carácter permanente de la actual nivelación de los procesos de integración vertical. Por el contrario, la ausencia de avances en la reducción de aranceles de importación y la relación de complementariedad entre IED y comercio, usualmente olvidada, muestran un papel residual. Con todo, nuestros resultados sugieren implicaciones de política económica sustanciales, ya que refuerzan la idea de un cambio histórico hacia una nueva etapa «normal» de comercio internacionalThis paper exhaustively analyses the recent decline of international trade elasticities to output growth. We extend an empirical model of import demand functions to account not only for transitory factors, such as relative prices and import intensity-adjusted measures of demand (I-O Tables), but also for habitually neglected permanent factors such as protectionism, vertical integration (i.e. Global Value Chains) and foreign direct investment (FDI). Dealing with a non-stationary heteregenous panel of 27 countries, we estimate a panel Error Correction Model from 1960 to 2015 in order to break down world trade elasticities. Our main fi ndings evidence: i) the presence of panel (cointegrating) structural changes in the trade-to-GDP relationship in 2000 and 2009, private consumption being a source of disruptionii) although investment and exports are the most sensitive, import-intensive components of demand, this is far from being transitory, which is clearly weighing on the current slowdowniii) the relevant contribution of GVCs shows a procyclical pattern, questioning the permanent nature of the current levelling-off of vertical integration processes. The lack of progress in reducing import tariffs and the usual discarded, complementary relationship between FDI and imports have a residual role. “I am a fisherman and that is why I protect the sea” Campaign for the education and sensitizing in order to favour the collaboration of professional fishermen and sports people on the coast of Andalucía in the protection of sea turtles

[Resumo] Entre os instrumentos sociais de intervención para xestionar con efectividade a atención a tartarugas mariñas feridas debido á súa captura accidental e optimizar a súa recuperación, é fundamental propiciar a colaboración e implicación do sector pesqueiro profesional e deportivo na conservación das tartarugas mariñas, practicando unha pesca sostible, e actuando en caso de enxergar exemplares feridos ou enfermos, ou de capturas accidentais de tartarugas mariñas. Para iso, a Aula do Mar de Málaga, en colaboración coa Consellaría de Medio Ambiente da Junta de Andalucía, puxo en marcha a campaña “Son pescador y por eso protejo el mar”. Na citada actuación celebráronse reunións de traballo e encontros formativos cos pescadores nos portos pesqueiros da costa andaluza, apoiadas con material divulgativo e formativo. É importante ter en conta a opinión dos pescadores sobre a problemática de conservación das tartarugas mariñas e do ámbito costeiro, pois moitas veces ignórase o valor da súa experiencia e a súa interacción habitual coas tartarugas mariñas. Así mesmo, para lograr unha colaboración efectiva dos pescadores co Centro de Recuperación de Especies Mariñas Ameazadas de Andalucía, é fundamental manter un continuo contacto persoal e un recoñecemento ás súas colaboracións, alén de lles facilitar esta tarefa ofrecéndolles formación e equipamento axeitado.[Abstract] Among the social instruments of intervention in order to effectively manage attention to sea turtles which have been injured alter being accidentally caught, and in order to optimize their recovery, it is of absolute importance to favour the collaboration and the implication of the sectors of professional and sports fishers in the protection od sea turtles, making use of sustainable fishing practices and taking action when sighting injured or sick animals, or when accidentally catching sea turtles. To such an end the Aula del Mar in Málaga, in collaboration with the Environmental Commission of the Junta de Andalucía, has started the campaign entitled “I AM A FISHERMAN AND THAT IS WHY I PROTECT THE SEA” in which various working meetings and educational encounters have been held with fishing people in the fishing ports along the coast of Andalucía, backed up by informative and educational material. It is important to bear in mind the opinion held by the fishing people with regards to the problem of the protection of sea turtles and the coastal areas, given that often the value of their experience and habitual interaction with sea turtles is ignored. At the same time, in order to reach an effective collaboration with the fishing people with the Centre for the Recovery of Threatened Marine Species of Andalucía, it is of utmost importance to maintain a continuous personal contact with, and recognition of, the collaborations, as well as making this easier for them by offering them suitable education and equipment

Novedades en la residencia temporal, el arraigo y otras circunstancias excepcionales para residir legalmente en España tras las reformas en la Ley y el Reglamento de Extranjería.

Este trabajo analiza el nuevo marco jurídico derivado de las últimas reformas de la Ley y el Reglamento de Extranjería en materia de residencia temporal no lucrativa, y los principales supuestos de residencia por circunstancias excepcionales, dejando al margen -por su especificidad- el arraigo de las mujeres extranjeras víctimas de violencia de género del art. 31 bis de la Ley. El legislador mejora la sistemática, precisa los requi-sitos, en especial, los medios económicos y apela a la situación nacional de empleo co-mo posible razón para limitar el arraigo social; criterios económicos que flexibiliza la jurisprudencia tanto legalmente en los casos de arraigo del art. 31.3 de la Ley Orgánica 2/2009, de 11 de diciembre (en adelante LOEx), como en su desarrollo reglamentario (RD 557/2011 de 20 de abril, en adelante RELOEx)
